Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society

The Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, known as the Lit and Phil, is one of the oldest learned societies in the United Kingdom and the second-oldest provincial learned society in the country. It was established on February 28, 1781, with its first formal meeting held on March 14 of that year, and it promotes research, scholarship and public engagement with science and philosophy through lectures, publications and academic discussions. The society maintains a library and archives, holds regular educational events, and recognizes distinguished scientific contributions through awards including the Dalton Medal.
