Elsevier is a Dutch academic publishing company that specializes in scientific, technical and medical content. It was founded in 1880 and took its name and logo from the earlier Dutch publishing house Elzevir, which was an inspiration but has no connection to the modern company. It is part of the RELX Group, known until 2015 as Reed Elsevier. Its products include journals such as The Lancet and Cell, the ScienceDirect collection of electronic journals, the Scopus citation database, the SciVal research performance tool and the ClinicalKey search engine for clinicians. According to RELX reports, it published more than 600,000 articles a year in over 2,800 journals in 2022. Elsevier has been criticized for its high profit margins and copyright practices, and some academics have organized boycotts, which has encouraged preprint servers and other alternative routes to publication.
