Pixar Animation Studios is an American computer animation studio headquartered in Emeryville, California, founded on February 3, 1986, by Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith after growing out of Lucasfilm's Graphics Group with early funding from Steve Jobs. It became known for creating Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer animated feature film, and has since released 31 feature films that together have earned more than 17 billion dollars worldwide. The Walt Disney Company acquired Pixar on May 5, 2006, and the studio now operates as part of Walt Disney Studios while keeping its own identity and Emeryville site.
