The White Pass and Yukon Route is a narrow-gauge railway connecting the port town of Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse in Canada's Yukon Territory, built between 1898 and 1900 during the Klondike Gold Rush to carry prospectors and freight over the mountainous White Pass route that had previously been passable only on foot or by pack animal. Its original freight and passenger traffic declined sharply once road transport improved and gold rush traffic subsided, and the railway now operates primarily as a heritage tourist attraction, carrying passengers from cruise ships docking at Skagway on scenic excursions along its original mountain route.
