Volkswagen Autoeuropa Lda. is a car assembly company with a plant at Palmela, near Lisbon, Portugal. It was formed in 1991 as an equal joint venture of Ford and Volkswagen, started operations in 1995, and became wholly owned by Volkswagen from 1999 when Ford left. It first assembled a shared multi purpose vehicle sold as the Volkswagen Sharan, SEAT Alhambra and Ford Galaxy, and is the largest foreign industrial investment in Portugal.
