Viking Press, formally Viking Penguin and also listed as Viking Books, is an American publishing company owned by Penguin Random House. Harold K. Guinzburg and George S. Oppenheimer founded it in New York City on March 1, 1925, and its name and logo, a Viking ship drawn by Rockwell Kent, were chosen as symbols of enterprise, adventure and exploration in publishing. In 1933 it created a department called Junior Books, later Viking Children's Books, whose first title was The Story About Ping; the list includes Newbery and Caldecott medal winners such as Make Way for Ducklings and Corduroy. The Penguin Group acquired Viking Press in 1975 for 12 million dollars after the house ran into financial difficulties.
