Upwork Inc., formerly known as Elance-oDesk, is an American freelancing platform headquartered in Palo Alto and San Francisco, California, that connects businesses with independent contractors. Its lineage traces to Elance, founded in 1999, and oDesk, launched in 2003; the two merged in 2013 to form Elance-oDesk, which was rebranded as Upwork in 2015 and went public in 2018. On the platform, clients post job descriptions and budget ranges and freelancers submit bids for the work, and once a freelancer is hired the two parties set contract terms, rates and deadlines through Upwork's own system.
