United Press International (UPI) is an American news agency headquartered in Washington, D.C., founded in 1907 as United Press by newspaper publisher E. W. Scripps and formed into its current name in 1958 through a merger with the International News Service. Once one of the two dominant American wire services alongside the Associated Press, UPI has changed ownership several times since the late twentieth century and today operates at a much smaller scale, owned since 2000 by News World Communications.
