The Triumph Motor Company was a British car and motor manufacturer of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its origins lie in 1885, when Siegfried Bettmann of Nuremberg formed S. Bettmann and Co. in London to import bicycles, which he sold under the trade name Triumph from 1886. With a partner, Moritz Schulte, he began producing bicycles in Coventry in 1889, and Triumph built its first car in 1923. Leyland Motors acquired the company in 1960, and it eventually became part of the giant British Leyland. The Triumph name was last used on cars in 1984, and the marque was later acquired by BMW.
