Tanzania Railways Corporation

The Tanzania Railways Corporation is a state-owned enterprise that runs one of Tanzania's two main railway networks, established in 1977 when the East African Railways and Harbours Corporation was dissolved and its assets divided among Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Headquartered in Mchafukoge, Ilala District, Dar es Salaam, it operates a 2,600-kilometer meter-gauge network with no electrification on its main lines, running two principal east-west routes, the Central Line from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma and the Tanga Line from Tanga to Arusha, and connecting to Lake Victoria ferry services linking the Uganda and Kenya railways. In 2024 it inaugurated a new Standard Gauge Railway terminal in Dar es Salaam connecting electric-powered trains to Dodoma, completing the 460-kilometer route in under four hours.
