Sydney Trains is the operator and brand name for suburban and intercity passenger train services in and around Greater Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. It was created from a 2012 restructure of RailCorp, when the state government split the former CityRail operation into two new organisations that took over services from July 2013, with Sydney Trains inheriting the Sydney suburban lines and a sister body taking the intercity and regional trains. RailCorp kept ownership of the network infrastructure, and Sydney Trains became an independent standalone agency in July 2017, with Transport for NSW managing the network and its Opal ticketing system. The inner network is a suburban system with an underground core, covering 369 km of route over 919 km of track with 169 stations on nine lines, labelled T1 to T9. Most rolling stock is double-deck electric multiple units, and Sydney Trains also runs intercity services to destinations such as Newcastle, Bathurst and Goulburn. It carried 270 million suburban passenger journeys in 2024-25, making it the busiest rail network in Australia.
