SSE plc is a British energy company headquartered in Perth, Scotland, one of the largest electricity generators and network operators in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1998 through the merger of Scottish Hydro-Electric and Southern Electric, two regional electricity companies created out of the privatization of the British electricity industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s, taking the name Scottish and Southern Energy before shortening it to SSE. The company generates electricity from renewable sources, particularly onshore and offshore wind and hydroelectric power, operates electricity transmission and distribution networks across northern Scotland and southern England, and has positioned itself as a major developer of offshore wind projects supporting the United Kingdom's transition toward renewable electricity generation.
