The Southern Company is an American electric utility holding company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1945 to bring together several electric utilities operating across the southeastern United States, including Georgia Power and Alabama Power. It is one of the largest electric utility holding companies in the United States, and its subsidiary Georgia Power completed the expansion of the Vogtle nuclear plant, the first new nuclear reactors built from scratch in the United States in decades, entering commercial operation in 2023 and 2024.
