Sony Pictures Animation, also called Sony Animation or SPA, is an American animation studio founded on May 9, 2002 and based in Los Angeles, California. It is owned by Sony Pictures through the Motion Picture Group division, which makes it a subsidiary within a larger entertainment company. Its feature films, whether released in theaters or made for streaming, are distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures under the Columbia Pictures banner or through Netflix, while direct-to-video releases come from Sony Pictures itself. The studio has produced dozens of feature films, beginning with Open Season in September 2006. Its highest-grossing film is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and KPop Demon Hunters became the most-watched title on Netflix and the first Netflix film to top the box office. The upcoming slate includes further Spider-Verse and Hotel Transylvania films.
