Saab AB is a Swedish aerospace and defense company headquartered in Stockholm, with major operations in Linkoping, founded in 1937 as Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget to build military aircraft for Sweden's own national defense in the years before the Second World War. Saab is best known for its Gripen multirole fighter aircraft and for Swedish submarines built through its Kockums subsidiary. The company spun off its automobile division as a separate company, Saab Automobile, in 1990, which passed through several later owners before ceasing car production in the early 2010s, leaving today's Saab AB focused entirely on aerospace and defense.
