Riot Games, Inc. is an American video game developer, publisher and esports tournament organizer headquartered in Los Angeles, founded in September 2006 by Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill to develop League of Legends, released in 2009. The multiplayer online battle arena game grew into one of the most-played and most-watched competitive video games in the world, supported by a substantial professional esports ecosystem that Riot itself organizes and promotes. In 2011 Riot Games was acquired by the Chinese conglomerate Tencent, which took full ownership by 2015, and the studio has since expanded into other games in the same universe, including the first-person shooter Valorant and, through collaboration with the animation studio Fortiche, the television series Arcane.
