RFFSA, the Rede Ferroviaria Federal, was the state-owned national railway company of Brazil, created on March 16, 1957 under Federal Law 3.115 to unify and operate 22 previously nationalized railroads into an integrated network across Brazil's south, southeast, central-west and northeast regions. Its freight operations were privatized in stages beginning in 1996, and the company ceased operations on December 7, 1999, with the liquidation formally completed under Federal Law 11.483 by May 31, 2007.
