Perplexity AI

Perplexity AI is an American privately held software company headquartered in San Francisco, California, founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski. The company offers a web search engine that combines large language models with real-time web search to synthesize sourced answers to user queries, available through a free tier and a paid Perplexity Pro tier that adds access to more advanced language models, document search and API access. Its search infrastructure, called Sonar, is built on the Llama language model developed by Meta, and was processing approximately 30 million queries a day as of mid-2025.
