Pakistan Railways is the state-owned railway operator of Pakistan, tracing its origin to 1886 as the North Western State Railway and passing into the ownership of the Government of Pakistan at independence in 1947. It provides both freight and passenger rail service across a network of 7,791 kilometres of track and 494 stations, headquartered in Lahore, and in the 2023-2024 fiscal year it carried 42.1 million passengers and 5.7 million tonnes of freight. The organization has faced sustained financial and maintenance difficulties, and it is led by a Federal Secretary who also chairs the Railway Board.
