O'Reilly Media, formerly O'Reilly and Associates, is an American learning company established by Tim O'Reilly that provides technical and professional skills courses through an online learning platform and also publishes books on programming and other technical subjects. The company began in 1978 as a private technical writing consultancy in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area, and from 1984 it kept publishing rights to manuals it wrote for Unix vendors. Its early Nutshell Handbooks were well received, and from 1988 books and manuals became its main business. Its books are known for a woodcut animal on the cover, a design by Edie Freedman. In 1993 it launched the Global Network Navigator, one of the first web portals, which it sold to AOL in 1995. From 1997 to 2020 it was also a well-known organizer of technology conferences, before closing that part of the business in March 2020.
