The Open Software Foundation, Inc., known as OSF, was a not-for-profit industry consortium for creating an open standard for an implementation of the Unix operating system. It was formed in 1988 and merged with X/Open in 1996 to become The Open Group. Despite the similarities in name, OSF was unrelated to the Free Software Foundation or to the Open Source Initiative. It is recorded here as a consortium that sponsored operating system work, distinct from the commercial Unix vendors that were its members and from the standards bodies that followed it.
