Norwegian Air Shuttle is a Norwegian low-cost carrier headquartered near Oslo, founded in 1993 as a small regional shuttle operator before transforming in the 2000s into a major low-fare competitor across the Nordic and wider European market. In the 2010s Norwegian expanded aggressively into long-haul, low-cost transatlantic service between Europe and North America using widebody aircraft, a strategy that drew wide industry attention but ultimately proved financially unsustainable, and the airline abandoned its long-haul operations and underwent a major debt restructuring around 2021 to survive. Since then Norwegian has refocused on short and medium-haul routes within Europe and to Scandinavian and Nordic leisure destinations, operating from its main bases at Oslo, Copenhagen and other Nordic airports.
