Nasdaq, Inc. is an American financial services and stock exchange company headquartered in New York City, operator of the Nasdaq Stock Market, the second-largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization of listed companies. It was founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers as the world's first electronic stock market, using computerized quotations rather than a physical trading floor, and its acronym name derives from that origin. Nasdaq has long been closely associated with the listings of major technology companies, and beyond exchange operations the company has grown a substantial market technology and data and analytics business that licenses its trading and surveillance software to other exchanges around the world.
