Munich Re is a German reinsurance company headquartered in Munich, founded in 1880 as Munchener Ruckversicherungs-Gesellschaft to provide reinsurance, insurance that insurance companies themselves buy to spread the risk of large claims. It grew into one of the world's largest reinsurers, and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway was for a period one of its largest outside shareholders.
