Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc., known as MUFG, is a Japanese bank holding company headquartered in Tokyo, the largest bank in Japan and one of the largest banking groups in the world by total assets. It was formed in 2005 through the merger of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group and UFJ Holdings, uniting several older Japanese banking houses whose own histories reach back to the nineteenth century Mitsubishi zaibatsu. MUFG operates through subsidiaries including MUFG Bank and Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation, offering commercial banking, trust banking and securities services domestically and through an extensive international network. The group has also built a large stake in the American regional bank MUFG Union Bank and other overseas financial institutions.
