Mattel, Inc. is an American multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company headquartered in El Segundo, California, founded in Los Angeles in January 1945 by Harold Matson, Ruth Handler and Elliot Handler. The company is best known for the Barbie fashion doll line, introduced in 1959 and one of the best-selling toy lines in history, alongside other major brands including Hot Wheels die-cast vehicles, Fisher-Price children's toys and the American Girl doll line. Mattel has increasingly pursued film adaptations of its toy properties, most notably the 2023 live-action Barbie film, which became one of the highest-grossing films of that year.
