Marvel Comics is an American comic book publisher, owned by the Walt Disney Company since December 31, 2009 and a subsidiary of Disney Publishing Worldwide since March 2023. It was founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman as Timely Comics and by 1951 had generally become known as Atlas Comics. The Marvel era is dated from August 1961 with the launch of The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and many others, which fixed Marvel as the primary brand. Its characters include Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, and teams such as the Avengers and the X-Men, mostly set in a shared Marvel Universe. It has also published comics based on licensed properties such as Star Wars.
