Malaysia Airlines is the flag carrier of Malaysia, headquartered near Kuala Lumpur International Airport, tracing its history to Malayan Airways, founded in 1947, which split into separate Malaysian and Singaporean carriers in the early 1970s. The airline suffered two catastrophic losses within months of each other in 2014, the disappearance of flight MH370 and the shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, events that severely damaged its finances and reputation and led to a full state-led restructuring. Since 2015 the airline has operated under the holding company Malaysia Aviation Group, which the Malaysian government renationalized and reorganized to oversee Malaysia Airlines alongside affiliated aviation businesses, as the carrier worked to rebuild its network and financial position in the years that followed.
