Lukoil PJSC is a Russian multinational oil and gas company headquartered in Moscow, one of the largest privately owned oil companies in the world by proved reserves and production. It was formed in 1991 from the merger of several Soviet-era West Siberian oil production associations, and its name is an acronym combining the initials of three of the founding oil fields, Langepas, Urai and Kogalym, with the word oil. Lukoil is engaged in the full range of oil and gas operations, from exploration and production through refining, petrochemicals and a large international network of retail filling stations across Europe and the United States. Unlike several other major Russian energy companies, Lukoil has historically operated as a publicly traded, non-state-controlled company, though it has faced Western sanctions following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
