Lufthansa, formally Deutsche Lufthansa AG, is the flag carrier of Germany, headquartered in Cologne and founded in 1953 as a successor to the original Deutsche Luft Hansa, which had been dissolved after the Second World War. It is the largest airline in Europe by fleet size and, together with its subsidiary carriers Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings under the Lufthansa Group umbrella, one of the largest airline groups in the world by revenue. A founding member of the Star Alliance in 1997, Lufthansa operates its principal hubs at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport, and its history includes operating some of the earliest transatlantic and round-the-world commercial air routes of the original pre-war Luft Hansa.
