Lemington Glass Works

Lemington Glass Works was a glass manufacturing company in Lemington, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, opened in 1787 by the Northumberland Glass Company on land leased from the Duke of Northumberland. It first made flat glass in large cone furnaces, chosen for the site access to coal and to the River Tyne for shipping raw materials, and after a partial demolition in 1837 and a revival under Sowerby and Co from 1898, the General Electric Company bought the works in 1906 and converted it to make light bulbs and glass tubing. Production continued into the 1950s before winding down, and glass manufacturing at the site ended altogether in 1997; its 1797 glass cone, one of only four such cones surviving in the United Kingdom, is a listed structure now used as a showroom.
