Lankapuvath is Sri Lanka national and only news agency, based in Colombo and founded in 1978 by press baron and lawyer Esmond Wickremesinghe. It is jointly owned by five partners, including the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, the Independent Television Network and Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, and it distributes news and images to Sri Lankan media by internet, television, SMS and mobile phone around the clock. Through the Organisation of Asia Pacific News Agencies it maintains links with news organizations in more than thirty countries, and it survived a 2001 to 2004 government attempt to shut it down as a cost cutting measure.
