KLM, formally Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij (Royal Aviation Company), is the flag carrier of the Netherlands, headquartered in Amstelveen near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Founded in 1919, it is generally recognized as the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name. KLM merged with Air France in 2004 to form the Air France-KLM holding company, though both airlines continued operating under their own separate brands, and KLM remains a member of the SkyTeam alliance that Air France co-founded in 2000. Its network is built around Schiphol as a major European connecting hub, with a particularly strong historical presence on long-haul routes to destinations in the former Dutch colonial world, including Indonesia and the Caribbean.
