Khara, Inc. is a Japanese independent animation studio and character licensing company located in Suginami, Tokyo, best known for the Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. Its primary animation production arm is Studio Khara. Hideaki Anno founded it on May 17, 2006, after leaving Gainax, and he remains its president. The name comes from the Greek word for joy, and its logo is that word handwritten in Greek letters by Anno's wife, Moyoco Anno. By 2014 the copyright for the Neon Genesis Evangelion series had been transferred to Khara. In 2016 Khara sued Gainax over unpaid royalties and a loan, and when Gainax filed for bankruptcy in 2024 its trademark passed to Khara. In August 2024 Khara also acquired the intellectual property of the tokusatsu works of P Productions, and it has taken part in live-action projects such as Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman.
