Johns Hopkins University Press, also called JHU Press or JHUP, is the publishing division of Johns Hopkins University and the oldest continuously running university press in the United States. Daniel Coit Gilman, the first president of the university, inaugurated it in 1878 as the Publication Agency, which issued the American Journal of Mathematics in its first year and the American Chemical Journal in its second. Its first book, a memorial tribute to the poet Sidney Lanier, appeared in 1881. It became the Johns Hopkins Press in 1891 and took its present name in 1972. The press publishes about ninety scholarly journals and more than two hundred new books a year, and since 1993 it has run Project MUSE, an online provider of scholarly journals and electronic books. It has three operating divisions covering book publishing, journals and electronic publishing, and Hopkins Fulfillment Services, and its offices are in a renovated 1897 church in the Charles Village neighbourhood of Baltimore, Maryland.
