Hydro-Québec is a Canadian Crown corporation and public utility owned by the provincial government of Québec and headquartered in Montreal. It manages the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Québec and exports power to parts of the northeastern United States. The government established it in 1944 by expropriating private firms, and heavy investment in hydroelectric projects such as the James Bay Project followed. It operates 63 hydroelectric power stations with a combined capacity of 37,370 megawatts, is one of the largest hydropower producers in the world, and supplies about 10 percent of New England power needs. In 2023 it paid 2.47 billion Canadian dollars in dividends to the Government of Québec, its sole shareholder.
