MediaTek Inc. is a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, that designs chips for smartphones, tablets, televisions, and other consumer electronics. It originated as a chipset design unit within United Microelectronics Corporation focused on home entertainment products, and was spun off and incorporated as an independent company on May 28, 1997. As a fabless designer, MediaTek designs its semiconductor products but outsources their manufacturing to dedicated chip foundries, and it has grown into one of the largest suppliers of smartphone chipsets in the world.
