Harley-Davidson, Inc. is an American motorcycle manufacturer headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the best known motorcycle brands in the world. It was founded in 1903 by William S. Harley and brothers Arthur, Walter, and William Davidson, who built their first motorcycle in a small wooden shed in the Davidson family backyard in Milwaukee, and the company survived the Great Depression as one of only two American motorcycle manufacturers to do so, alongside Indian Motocycle. Harley-Davidson is particularly associated with large-displacement cruiser motorcycles built around its distinctive V-twin engine, and the brand carries strong cultural associations with American road culture and rider clubs built up over more than a century.
