Gray Marine Motor Company was an American builder of marine engines, active from 1910 until 1967 and based in Detroit. Its engines ranged from one to six cylinders and were offered first in gasoline form and later with diesel layouts. They powered pleasure boats, work boats and military craft, and many fishing boats, lobster boats, tugs and pleasure craft of roughly twelve to thirty-two feet carried Gray power. A good share of its engines were automotive blocks that the company converted for marine use, drawn from makers such as Hercules, Studebaker, Pontiac, Continental, American Motors and the General Motors Diesel Division. Gray also sold a line of outboard motors that used a curved housing and a flexible inner shaft to carry power from the motor to the propeller instead of a ninety-degree gearbox.
