The Gloster Aircraft Company was a British aircraft manufacturer from 1917 to 1963. It was founded during the First World War as the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company Limited, taking on the aircraft construction activities of H.H. Martyn and Co. of Cheltenham, and was later renamed because foreigners found Gloucestershire difficult to pronounce. It designed and built fighters for the Royal Air Force, including the Gladiator, the RAF's last biplane fighter, and the Meteor, the RAF's first jet-powered fighter, while its design office worked on the experimental E.28/39, the first British jet aircraft. It later became part of the Hawker Siddeley group, and the Gloster name disappeared in 1963.
