EVA Air is a major Taiwanese airline headquartered near Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, founded in the late 1980s by the Evergreen Group, the Taiwanese conglomerate best known internationally for its container shipping business. EVA Air was established to provide Taiwan with a second major international carrier alongside the older state-descended China Airlines, and it grew into one of Asia's most prominent airlines, known for premium long-haul service, its Hello Kitty-branded aircraft produced through a licensing partnership with Sanrio, and consistently strong safety and service rankings in international airline surveys. The airline is a member of the Star Alliance and operates an extensive long-haul network connecting Taiwan to North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and Oceania.
