Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad

Industrials

The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, nicknamed the Little Giant, was a railroad company formed on May 11, 1875, and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, connecting Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio, in the west and Connellsville, Pennsylvania, to the east; it did not reach Lake Erie itself until the formation of Conrail in 1976. The company derived much of its revenue from coal, coke, iron ore, limestone and steel, serving the steel mills of the greater Pittsburgh area so that it moved about one percent of all rail tonnage in the United States while operating only about one tenth of one percent of route miles nationally, and the eventual closure of those steel mills led to the end of the P&LE as an independent line in 1992.
