Why is General Mills dated to 1928 when its milling roots go back to the 1860s?
General Mills was formed in 1928 by merging Washburn Crosby with other regional millers, but the flour business it grew from dates to 1866.
The two dates mark different starting points. The milling lineage begins in 1866, when Cadwallader Washburn opened the first flour mill in Minneapolis, and in 1877 John Crosby joined him and the firm was renamed the Washburn Crosby Company. General Mills itself came into being in 1928, when James Ford Bell, son of James S. Bell, who took over leadership of Washburn Crosby in 1888, led the merger of Washburn Crosby with several other regional millers. So 1928 is the date of the corporation under its present name, while earlier years trace the flour business it grew from.
