Fortum Oyj is a Finnish energy company headquartered in Espoo, Finland, majority owned by the Finnish state, and one of the largest electricity producers in the Nordic and Baltic region. It was formed in 1998 through the merger of two Finnish state-owned energy companies, the oil company Neste and the electricity company Imatran Voima, though Neste was later demerged again as a separate company focused on refining and renewable fuels. Fortum generates electricity predominantly from low-carbon sources, especially nuclear and hydropower, and supplies both power and district heating across Finland, Sweden and other parts of the Nordic and Baltic markets. The company has also held major stakes in the German utility Uniper, acquired in the years following 2018.
