Fleischer Studios

Fleischer Studios was an American animation studio founded in New York City in 1929 by brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, and through the 1930s it was one of the leading rivals to Walt Disney Productions in theatrical cartoons. The studio originated characters including Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor, Koko the Clown and the Fleischer Superman shorts, and it was known for a style marked by surreal, gritty urban settings influenced by German Expressionism. After a labor strike and a relocation to Miami, Paramount Pictures acquired the studio in 1942 and reorganized it as Famous Studios, ending the Fleischer brothers' involvement; a company using the Fleischer Studios name still exists today, run by Max Fleischer's descendants, managing rights to the original characters.
