Exchange Telegraph Co Ltd, known as Extel, was a financial news and information service founded in London in March 1872, pioneering the delivery of stock market and commercial data over ticker-tape telegraph to offices, banks and clubs. It broadened into parliamentary news in 1876, general news in 1879 and legal services in 1891, and by 1913 ran a worldwide news service; in 1922 it introduced Extel cards, an early form of standardized corporate data snapshot. A series of acquisitions and mergers between 1987 and 2007 folded the business into what is now Thomson Reuters.
