Equinor ASA, known as Statoil until a 2018 rename, is a Norwegian energy company headquartered in Stavanger, founded in 1972 as a wholly state-owned oil company to develop Norway's North Sea petroleum resources. The Norwegian state remains its majority owner, and the company's 2018 renaming to Equinor was intended to reflect a broadened focus that includes renewable energy such as offshore wind alongside its oil and gas business.
