Engineering Research Associates

Information Technology

Engineering Research Associates, commonly known as ERA, was a pioneering computer firm from the 1950s. ERA became famous for its numerical computers, but as the market expanded it became better known for its drum memory systems. The firm was eventually purchased by Remington Rand and merged into its UNIVAC department, and many of the company founders later left to form Control Data Corporation. The ERA team started as a group of scientists and engineers working for the United States Navy during World War II on code-breaking, in a division known as the Communications Supplementary Activity - Washington.
