Agencia EFE is Spain's principal international news agency, established January 3, 1939 by Ramon Serrano Suner, Interior Minister under Francisco Franco, and headquartered in Madrid under state holding company SEPI. It ranks as the world's fourth-largest wire service after the Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse, distributing roughly three million news items a year across press, radio, television and internet channels through about 1,117 employees representing 60 nationalities as of 2025. EFE operates around the clock from four principal editorial centers in Madrid, Bogota, Cairo and Rio de Janeiro, maintaining a presence in more than 180 cities across 120 countries and serving as the dominant Spanish-language news distributor worldwide.
