EC Comics, formally E.C. Publications, Inc., is an American comic book publisher that specialised in horror, crime, satire, military fiction, dark fantasy and science fiction from the 1940s to the mid-1950s, notably the Tales from the Crypt series. Maxwell Gaines founded it as Educational Comics for educational and child-oriented stories. After Gaines died in a boating accident in 1947, his son William Gaines took over, renamed it Entertaining Comics and moved toward more mature material. Censorship pressure in 1954 and 1955 pushed it to concentrate on the humor magazine Mad, and by 1956 it had ceased all its comic lines except Mad, which became its most enduring success.
